So how did I get started in photography so late in life? In 2009 I was heading over seas for a deployment, and while on my pre-deployment leave I got to thinking that during my trips over and back, and during my stay I was going to be exposed to all sorts of interesting places and people, so I thought I should invest in a decent camera.
But what camera? How the hell do I even use the thing? Up until that point I had a Panasonic point and shoot, that did exactly that: point and shoot. I'm sure it did other things but I never learned how. I ended up buying a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS. I forget what I paid but I remember thinking that if I was going to drop that much money on a camera (lol @ hind sight), I should at least learn how to use it.
I picked up a couple books recommended by the guy who sold me the camera, most notably The Digital Photography Book - By Scott Kelby and away I went.
So where's all my pictures from the deployment?
Here's the thing... Just before heading over we were told that under no circumstance, were we allowed to use any cameras during our stay. We could use it on the way over, and on the way back, but for the stay portion, all cameras had to be locked away in our rooms. SONOFA... This meant I was able to grab a few very boring and bland pictures on the way over, then read about photography for 7 months with no actual hands on exposure, only to grab a couple quasi-decent amateurish photos on the return trip. Here's a couple
